The sun shines everywhere...

It does not shine only here and there.

In the same way yoga is for everyone.

Norma Colón

Norma Colón, a proud Latina, born and raised in The South Bronx, brings her passion for Iyengar Yoga to every class and private lesson.

A Certified Iyengar Yoga instructor since 1999, (with other prior certifications) Norma has been practicing and teaching Yoga for more than 40 years, in the tradition of Yoga Master B.K.S. Iyengar since 1987. Norma has studied with many of the world's top Iyengar Yoga teachers as well as with her Guru, B.K.S. Iyengar and his daughter, Gita Iyengar. She continues her studies with Abhijata Iyengar, even on Zoom.

Norma continues her studies at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York where her primary teacher was the renowned and beloved Senior Instructor, Mary Dunn.

Norma graduated from Grace Dodge Vocational H.S. in The Bronx in 1972 with a UFT Scholarship to Hunter College. She soon moved to Manhattan where she started studying and practicing yoga in 1977. After a two weekend teacher training course at Serenity Yoga in 1978, (then on East 72nd Street) Norma started teaching one class a week there and then at Mary Mount Manhattan College.

Norma’s teaching style is a unique synthesis of nurturing support and strong encouragement along with the application of hands-on correction. She brings out the best in her beginning students as well as those with considerable experience. Students with specific needs including back and knee injuries, fibromyalgia, MS, and other debilitating conditions have found Norma’s classes particularly rewarding as have many expecting mothers. Norma also offers Gentle Yoga classes for those who need or want a less rigorous approach.

Having majored in Human Movement (kenisiology, anatomy and physiology) at Hunter College, and with many years of individual study, Norma has a strong understanding of the workings of the human body and instinctively knows how to help students’ bodies learn to work and feel better from the inside out.

Students Say:

What I like most about Norma’s Iyengar is the precision involved. I feel that I have a greater understanding of the poses in my body because of the time taken to ensure that students are performing the poses properly.  It makes for a great foundation.

It was no surprise how quickly Norma adapted to teaching Iyengar Yoga via Zoom (from in-person classroom set-up). Flexibility is a key Norma attribute and a key result when taking Norma’s classes. If you don’t have all of the yoga props at home, no worries, Norma provides insight into how your couch, end table, bed, chairs, and cushions can be used as an aid for the many asanas/positions. Norma’s ‘eagle-eye’ is very evident, even with Zoom. Personal corrections are key to Norma’s instructions. It couldn’t be easier to take a class from the comfort of your home. Your mind, your body, and your soul will thank you.

Norma is the reason I fell in love with yoga. I’ve been taking her classes for years and they never fail to leave me feeling better than when I walked into the class. When Covid hit Norma didn’t miss a beat, she transitioned to Zoom and while nothing compares to her hands-on adjustments, her Zoom classes have become the highlight of my week! Her skills shine through when she has a classroom of both experienced yoga practicioners and people who have never done yoga before, and everyone leaves feeling challenged.
